What Is Muhurta?
Muhurta (मुहूर्त) is, first, a literal unit of time — and, by extension, the practice of choosing the most favourable one for something important.
The unit itself
A Muhurta is 1/30th of a day — roughly 48 minutes. A full day (from one sunrise to the next) traditionally contains 30 Muhurtas.
Abhijit Muhurta
The one Muhurta that recurs daily and is widely known by name: Abhijit Muhurta falls around local solar noon and is considered auspicious for most undertakings — except on Wednesdays.
Muhurta as a practice
Beyond the daily unit, "finding a Muhurta" means identifying a specific date and time believed astrologically favourable for a particular event — a wedding, a house-warming, a business launch — by weighing the day's Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga and Karana (see our Panchanga guide) alongside the individuals' birth charts where relevant.
