Sanskrit numerals above 18 are often built by subtraction rather than addition — 19 is "one-less-than-twenty" (एकोनविंशति, ekonaviṃśati) rather than "ten-plus-nine." This pattern repeats at each decade boundary and is one of the more distinctive features of the classical number system.
