About the Bhagavad Gita

The श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता is a dialogue of 700 shlokas in 18 chapters, set on the battlefield of Kurukshetra just before the war, between Arjuna and Krishna. It forms chapters 23–40 of the Bhishma Parva of the Mahabharata. Almost all of it is in the anushtubh shloka metre, with some longer trishtubh verses such as 2.20 and 2.22 below.

Below are seventeen of its best-known shlokas — the ones most quoted in speeches, essays and daily reflection — each with Devanagari, transliteration, and a Hindi and English meaning written for this page.

How to read the Gita as a beginner

  • Start with chapters 2, 3 and 12. Chapter 2 sets out the core teaching, chapter 3 is about action, and chapter 12 (only 20 verses) is about devotion.
  • Read one shloka a day with its meaning — slow reading sticks far better than finishing chapters.
  • Learn the metre. Most verses are two lines of 16 syllables; reciting them aloud makes memorising easy. See how to recognise a shloka.
  • Use a trusted edition with word-by-word meaning when you go deeper.

The Gita opens with धर्मक्षेत्रे कुरुक्षेत्रे (1.1) — that verse, with more daily shlokas, is on our Sanskrit slokas page. For another great hymn from the Mahabharata, see the Vishnu Sahasranamam.
