Sanskrit to Gujarati
Gujarati grew out of Sanskrit through Prakrit and the Apabhramsha of western India, so a large share of its vocabulary is Sanskrit — some words unchanged, many reshaped. This page shows how Sanskrit words became Gujarati, gives everyday Sanskrit sentences with their Gujarati meaning, and explains the differences to watch for.
Sanskrit and Gujarati: the script
Gujarati is written in the Gujarati script, a close cousin of Devanagari without the top line (शिरोरेखा): संस्कृत in Devanagari becomes સંસ્કૃત. Letter shapes differ, but every sound maps one-to-one, so a Sanskrit verse can be written fully in Gujarati script — which is how many Gujarati households print the Gita and stotras.
Sanskrit and Gujarati: the grammar
Gujarati kept something most modern Indian languages lost: three genders, including the neuter (નાન્યતર જાતિ), just as in Sanskrit — ઘર (house) and પુસ્તક (book) are neuter in both. It lost Sanskrit's dual number and most case endings, using postpositions instead: Sanskrit गृहे (in the house) becomes ઘરમાં.
