दीपावली २०२७

Diwali 2027

Lakshmi Puja falls on Friday, 29 October 2027 — Kartika Amavasya — about ten days earlier than in 2026. The five days run from Dhanteras on 27 October to Bhai Dooj on 31 October. One thing is different this year: Amavasya ends at about 7:05 PM on Diwali evening, so the puja window is unusually short.

Different Panchangs handle a short Amavasya evening in slightly different ways — some print the full Vrishabha window, others stop the muhurat when Amavasya ends. We show both so you can follow your family's practice. These timings are our own calculation (Lahiri ayanamsa) made a year ahead; we will re-check them against printed Panchangs in October 2027.

Why Kali Puja comes a day before Diwali in 2027

Lakshmi Puja and Kali Puja both fall on Kartika Amavasya, but they look for it at different hours. Lakshmi Puja needs Amavasya in the evening (Pradosh Kaal); Kali Puja needs it at midnight (Nishita Kaal).

In 2027 Amavasya begins at about 8:47 PM on Thursday, 28 October and ends at about 7:05 PM on Friday, 29 October. So the only midnight that has Amavasya is the night of the 28th — that is Kali Puja in West Bengal, Odisha and Assam (Kolkata Nishita: about 10:55 – 11:45 PM). The only evening with Amavasya at sunset is the 29th — that is Lakshmi Puja across the rest of India. Most years the two fall on the same night; 2027 is one of the years they split.

Frequently asked questions

When is Diwali in 2027?

Diwali (Lakshmi Puja) is on Friday, 29 October 2027, Kartika Amavasya. The five-day festival runs from Dhanteras on Wednesday, 27 October to Bhai Dooj on Sunday, 31 October.

Is Diwali 2027 on 28 or 29 October?

29 October for Lakshmi Puja. Amavasya begins at about 8:47 PM on 28 October and ends at about 7:05 PM on 29 October. On 28 October it begins only after Pradosh Kaal is over, while on 29 October it is present at sunset — so the evening puja falls on the 29th. Kali Puja, which needs Amavasya at midnight, is on the night of 28 October.

What is the Lakshmi Puja muhurat for Diwali 2027?

For New Delhi, Pradosh Kaal with Amavasya runs from sunset at 5:38 PM to about 7:05 PM on 29 October 2027, when Amavasya ends. The stable Vrishabha lagna begins at 6:35 PM, so the most auspicious overlap is about 6:35 PM to 7:05 PM. The window is shorter than usual this year — plan to start the puja soon after sunset.

Why is the Lakshmi Puja muhurat so short in 2027?

Because Amavasya ends at about 7:05 PM IST on 29 October, early in the evening. Lakshmi Puja is done while Amavasya and Pradosh Kaal overlap, so the usable window is roughly from sunset to 7:05 PM — about 1.5 hours in North India and less in western cities where the sun sets later.

When is Dhanteras 2027?

Wednesday, 27 October 2027. Trayodashi runs from about 1:00 AM on 27 October to about 10:49 PM that night, so the whole evening is available; the New Delhi puja muhurat is about 6:43 PM to 8:14 PM.

When is Kali Puja 2027?

Thursday, 28 October 2027. Kali Puja is performed at Nishita (around midnight) on Amavasya, and Amavasya is present at midnight only on the night of 28 October. In Kolkata the Nishita window is about 10:55 PM to 11:45 PM.

When are Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj in 2027?

Govardhan Puja, Annakut and the Gujarati New Year (Vikram Samvat 2084) are on Saturday, 30 October, and Bhai Dooj is on Sunday, 31 October 2027.
