Sandhi definition in Sanskrit, Hindi and English

संस्कृतम्

द्वयोः वर्णयोः परस्परं मेलनेन यः विकारः (परिवर्तनम्) भवति, सः सन्धिः इति कथ्यते।

हिन्दी

दो वर्णों के परस्पर मेल से जो विकार (परिवर्तन) होता है, उसे सन्धि कहते हैं।

English

Sandhi is the change that happens when two sounds meet — at the end of one word and the start of the next, or inside a compound.

Example: विद्या + आलयः = विद्यालयः — the two ā sounds merge into one long ā. Undoing a sandhi to find the original words is called सन्धि-विच्छेदः. Panini's grammar describes the conditions for sandhi with the rule परः सन्निकर्षः संहिता (1.4.109): sounds in close contact are in "saṃhitā", and there sandhi applies.

Three types of Sandhi

TypeWhen it happensExample
स्वरसन्धिः (अच्-सन्धिः) — vowel sandhiA vowel meets a vowelहिम + आलयः = हिमालयः

विसर्गसन्धिः — visarga sandhiA visarga (ः) meets a vowel or consonantनमः + ते = नमस्ते

1. Swar Sandhi (vowel sandhi) and its kinds

Swar sandhi has several kinds, each named after its result. School syllabi usually teach these five or six.

दीर्घसन्धिः — Dirgha (lengthening)

Rule: अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः — two similar vowels (अ/आ, इ/ई, उ/ऊ) merge into one long vowel.

हिम + आलयःहिमालयःअ + आ = आ
गिरि + ईशःगिरीशःइ + ई = ई
भानु + उदयःभानूदयःउ + उ = ऊ
देव + आलयःदेवालयःअ + आ = आ

गुणसन्धिः — Guna

सन्धि-विच्छेदसन्धिRule
इति + आदिइत्यादिइ → य्
यदि + अपियद्यपिइ → य्
सु + आगतम्स्वागतम्उ → व्

2. Vyanjan Sandhi (consonant sandhi)

When a consonant meets another sound, it often changes to suit it — becoming voiced before a voiced sound, nasal before a nasal, or matching the next consonant's place of articulation.

सन्धि-विच्छेदसन्धिRule
वाक् + ईशःवागीशःजश्त्वम् — क् becomes ग् before a vowel
जगत् + ईशःजगदीशःजश्त्वम् — त् becomes द्

How to recognise which sandhi it is

  • Long vowel where two short ones met (आ, ई, ऊ)? → दीर्घ.
  • ए or ओ in the middle where अ met इ or उ? → गुण. ऐ or औ? → वृद्धि.
  • A half letter य्, व् or र् before a vowel? → यण्. अय, अव, आय, आव? → अयादि.
  • Changed consonant at the join (ग, द, ङ, न्न, च्च)? → व्यञ्जन.
  • स्, श्, र् or ओ where a visarga used to be? → विसर्ग.

Sandhi is one part of Sanskrit grammar — see the Sanskrit grammar overview for how it fits with Samasa, Vibhakti and Dhatu. The sounds themselves are laid out on the Varnamala page.
