हनुमान चालीसा

Hanuman Chalisa Lyrics

The complete text — 2 opening dohas, all 40 chaupais, and the closing doha — composed by Goswami Tulsidas in the 16th century. Devanagari, English transliteration, and a brief plain-English gist for every single verse.

Tulsidas wrote the Hanuman Chalisa in Awadhi, a language closely related to Hindi, using the Devanagari script — which is why it's easily read and understood by Hindi speakers today, and commonly called "Hanuman Chalisa in Hindi" even though the original dialect is technically distinct. Chalisa comes from chalis, "forty," referring to the 40 quatrains (chaupais) at its heart, framed by two opening couplets (dohas) and one closing doha — 43 verses in total.

A word on the translation here

The Devanagari and transliteration above follow the traditional text closely. The one-line English gist beside each verse is a plain, accessible paraphrase meant to orient a reader unfamiliar with the story — not a scholarly or word-for-word translation. Verses 13–15 in particular carry real interpretive debate among traditional commentators (over exactly who is meant by certain names), which a single short line can't fully capture; treat the gists here as a reading aid, not the final word on meaning.
