पितृ दिवसः
Father's Day
Observed on the third Sunday of June across the United States, India, and most of the world — a modern, secular day honouring fathers, born from one woman's tribute to her own. It sits alongside a much older idea from the Sanskrit tradition: Pitru Devo Bhava, "may the father be as a god."
Where Father's Day actually comes from
The story is specific and well documented. Sonora Smart Dodd, of Spokane, Washington, heard a Mother's Day sermon in 1909 and wondered why fathers had no equivalent. Her own father, William Jackson Smart, was a Civil War veteran who had raised Sonora and her five siblings alone after his wife died in childbirth. Sonora petitioned local churches and organisations, and the first Father's Day celebration was held in Spokane on 19 June 1910. The idea travelled slowly — President Woodrow Wilson spoke in support in 1916, and Calvin Coolidge backed the idea in 1924, but neither made it official. It took until 1972, when President Richard Nixon signed a law permanently establishing the third Sunday of June as Father's Day in the United States, more than 60 years after Sonora's original campaign.
How it's celebrated in India
As with Mother's Day, India doesn't have a traditional festival in this exact calendar slot, so Father's Day here is an imported, secular, largely urban observance — cards, gifts, family meals and outings, much as in the West.
An older idea: Pitru Devo Bhava
मातृदेवो भव। पितृदेवो भव। आचार्यदेवो भव। अतिथिदेवो भव॥
mātṛdevo bhava, pitṛdevo bhava, ācāryadevo bhava, atithidevo bhava
"May you regard your mother as a god, your father as a god, your teacher as a god, your guest as a god." Part of the convocation address given to a student completing their studies, in the Shikshavalli chapter of the Taittiriya Upanishad — the same line that gives us Matru Devo Bhava for mothers.
As with its counterpart for mothers, this isn't a once-a-year instruction — it places the father second only to the mother in a short list of people owed god-like reverence in ordinary daily life, not on one Sunday in June.
Simple, meaningful ways to mark the day
Time, not things
A shared meal, a visit, or an uninterrupted conversation often lands better than a gift.
A handwritten note
Specific memories or thanks mean more than a generic card message.
Ask about his life
Many fathers rarely get asked about their own younger years, ambitions, or struggles.
Continue it quietly
Pitru Devo Bhava suggests the sentiment shouldn't need a calendar reminder every other day of the year.
Frequently asked questions
When is Father's Day?
In the United States, India, and most of the world, on the third Sunday of June.
Who started Father's Day?
Sonora Smart Dodd organised the first celebration in 1910 in Spokane, Washington, honouring her own father. It became a permanent US holiday only in 1972, when President Richard Nixon signed it into law.
Is Father's Day a Hindu festival?
No — it's a modern, internationally observed day with American origins. India has widely adopted the same date as a secular, family observance, distinct from the older Sanskrit concept of Pitru Devo Bhava.
What does Pitru Devo Bhava mean?
"May the father be as a god (to you)" — a line from the Taittiriya Upanishad's convocation address, instructing a student to revere their mother, father, teacher and guest as divine. A standing ethical instruction, not a once-a-year occasion.
