संस्कृत दिवसः
World Sanskrit Day (Sanskrit Diwas)
An annual observance celebrating the Sanskrit language, its literature, and its ongoing revival — marked by the Government of India and Sanskrit institutions worldwide.
When is it observed?
World Sanskrit Day falls on Shravana Purnima — the full moon of the Shravana month — the same lunar day as Raksha Bandhan. In 2026, this falls on August 28. Because it's tied to a lunar Tithi rather than a fixed Gregorian date, the day shifts each year, typically landing in August.
Why this date?
The Government of India designated Shravana Purnima for World Sanskrit Day in 1969, marking the birth anniversary of Panini, the ancient grammarian whose Ashtadhyayi systematised Sanskrit grammar around the 6th–4th century BCE and remains one of the most influential grammatical treatises ever written, in any language.
How it's marked
Sanskrit departments, universities and cultural organisations hold seminars, recitation competitions (often of the Vedas or classical poetry), and award ceremonies recognising contributions to Sanskrit scholarship. Some states observe a full "Sanskrit Week" around the day rather than a single date.
