समासप्रकरणम्
Samas in Sanskrit
How Sanskrit packs several words into one: the definition of samas, its six types and which word leads in each, samas-vigraha with examples, the karmadharaya–bahuvrihi test, and practice.
Samas definition
समासः means "putting together" — अनेकपदानाम् एकपदीभावः समासः, "making one word out of several words". The traditional short definition is संक्षेपः समासः: samas is abbreviation. Instead of saying राज्ञः पुरुषः ("the man of the king"), Sanskrit joins the two into राजपुरुषः, dropping the case ending of the first word.
Breaking a compound back into a phrase that shows its meaning is called समास-विग्रहः. That is what exams ask for: write the vigraha and name the samas. Note the difference from sandhi: sandhi joins sounds, samas joins words — and a samas often contains a sandhi inside it (सूर्य + उदयः → सूर्योदयः).
The 6 types of samas
Grammarians classify compounds by which word carries the main meaning (प्रधान).
| Samas | Which word leads | Example and vigraha | Note |
| अव्ययीभावः | पूर्वपदप्रधानः — the first word (an indeclinable) leads | यथाशक्ति = शक्तिम् अनतिक्रम्य | The result is indeclinable, usually neuter |
| तत्पुरुषः | उत्तरपदप्रधानः — the second word leads | राजपुरुषः = राज्ञः पुरुषः | Named after the case of the first word |
| कर्मधारयः | A type of तत्पुरुष — both words describe the same thing | नीलकमलम् = नीलं च तत् कमलम् | Adjective + noun, or comparison |
| द्विगुः | A type of कर्मधारय — first word is a number | त्रिलोकी = त्रयाणां लोकानां समाहारः | Usually means a group |
| द्वन्द्वः | उभयपदप्रधानः — both words lead equally | रामलक्ष्मणौ = रामः च लक्ष्मणः च | Joined by च (and) |
| बहुव्रीहिः | अन्यपदप्रधानः — the compound points to someone else | पीताम्बरः = पीतम् अम्बरं यस्य सः (कृष्णः) | Describes a third person or thing |

Karmadharaya or bahuvrihi? The test that settles it
पीताम्बरम् and पीताम्बरः look alike. If it means "a yellow garment" (पीतं च तत् अम्बरम्), it is कर्मधारय — the compound is the garment. If it means "he whose garment is yellow", i.e. Krishna (पीतम् अम्बरं यस्य सः), it is बहुव्रीहि — the compound points to someone outside itself. Ask: does the compound name one of its own words, or someone else? If someone else, it is bahuvrihi.
Practice: write the vigraha and name the samas
